How Can a Masjid Be the House of Allah If God Has No Place?

Answered by Shaykh Faraz Rabbani

Question: Salam.  I’ve been taught that a masjid is the home of Allah (swt). I’ve also been taught that God has no place. How can these two ideas co-exist?

Answer: Walaikum assalam wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh,

I pray this finds you in the best of health and spirits.

The mosque is referred to as the “House of Allah,” as an ascription of honor (idafat tashrif), not as an affirmation of dwelling–for Allah Most High is the creator of time and space, and is exalted beyond both time and space.

wassalam,
