Question

Suppose a person has broken fasts of Ramadan over several years due to eating or sexual intercourse, and he now would like to expiate for the multiple offenses that occurred. How many fasts would he have to keep to expiate?

Answer

I pray you are in the best health and faith, insha’Allah.

You must make up (qada’) of all the fasts you deliberately nullified, without excuse, and perform one expiation (kaffara). [Shurunbulali, Maraqi al-Falah]

The expiation is to fast for sixty consecutive days, which do not include (1) Eid al-Fitr, (2) Eid al-Adha, or (3) the three days after that.

You also need to repent for breaking those fasts. See: A Reader on Tawba (Repentance)

And see: How Many Expiations Are Required For Multiple Broken Fasts?

And Allah alone knows best.

في مراقي الفلاح: ( صام شهرين متتابعين ليس فيها يوم عيد ولا ) بعض ( أيام التشريق ) للنهي عن صيامها
