Should the Jawbone Be Washed During Wudu?

Hanafi Fiqh

Answered by Ustadh Tabraze Azam

Question: Assalam alaykum

1. Is the part of the jawbone, where the bone and neck meet, a part of that which must be washed during ablution?

2. I get a dark substance in the corner of my eyes often. Am I obligated to check for it and scratch it off every time I get it in the corner of my eyes?

Answer: Wa alaikum assalam wa rahmatullah,

1. Yes, you must wash the entire face, including the jawbone. But it is unnecessary to conceive of the face in such manner. Fill your hands with water and pour it over your face whilst rubbing the area. Do this thrice and you have fulfilled the sunna. Doing more than this is misgivings and excessiveness.

2. Yes, you should remove the residue from your eyes before performing the ritual ablution (wudu) or bath (ghusl). But even if you didn’t do so, it would not affect the validity of your ablution as the assumption is that water would have reached the area.
