Is There a Specific Du’a for Circumcision?

Shafi'i Fiqh

Answered by Shaykh Jamir Meah

Question: Assalamu alaykum

Is there a specific du’a for circumcision?

Answer: Wa’alaykum assalam. Thank you for your question.

There does not seem to be any supplication transmitted specifically for circumcision. However, one can make use of the general prayers that apply to recovery after illness or surgery etc.

Sunnas related to circumcision

Male circumcision is obligatory. It is sunna to circumcise the child on the seventh day, if this is possible, taking into account the child’s health and well-being. If the seventh day is not possible, then the sunna is to do it on the 14 the day, if not then on the 21st day and so on.

It is also sunna to perform the ‘aqiqah (slaughtering) for the child on the 7th day or afterwards.

It is recommended to have a celebration (walima) for the circumcision, following the same sunnas and rules of a wedding celebration, such as inviting pious people.

Personal Supplication

You can make your own personalised supplication, in your own words, stating your intention in fulfilling the obligatory act of male circumcision and asking for a painless and speedy recovery, as well as general du’a for the child.

Supplication

For the general recovery of the child after circumcision, you can say these supplications,

O Lord of the people, remove this pain and cure it. You are the one who cures and there is no one besides You who can cure, grant such a cure that no illness remains.

[Bukhari, Muslim]

أَسْـأَلُ اللهَ العَـظيـم، رَبَّ العَـرْشِ العَـظيـم أَنْ يَشْفِيَكَ
I ask Almighty Allah, Lord of the Magnificent Throne, to make you well.
